The retailer says it will soon offer an option to sell products in China on Amazon.com and that it plans to create an international marketplace for Chinese goods that will allow its Chinese employees to sell their products in other countries.
The move comes as Alibaba and other Chinese companies are expanding their e-tailers in the United States, Canada and Europe.
Walmart’s announcement Tuesday is the first time the company has said it will open a U.S. online store, but it has said the company plans to open stores in Canada, Mexico, Germany, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom.
Wal-Mart has more than 8,400 stores in the U.K. and Canada.
The retailer has already announced plans to start a direct-to-consumer e-retailer, called Wal-martDirect, in 2020.
